| Wai-O-Tapu
thermal area covers about 18 sq.km of which only a very small portion
is seen by tourists. It is a Scenic Reserve and has the largest area of
surface thermal activity of any hydrothermal system in the Taupo volcanic
Zone. Everywhere are collapsed craters, cold and hot boiling pools of
steaming fumaroles, water and mud. And the sulphur smell is present -
e-verywhere (I love it, by the way..)!! This area is associated with volcanic
activity dating back about 150.000 years with the first indications of
hydrothermal activity about 15.000 years ago... |
